More about the Thai Language
History of Thai
The Thai language is a member of the Tai – Kadai language family. The Tai – Kadai languages include all those spoken in Southeast Asia, as well as Myanmar and Laos, and even parts of China. It is the only official language of Thailand. The Thai language was developed between the 13th and 15th century. The Thai writing system has basically stayed identical since then, which means old scripts from even the Sukothai era can still be understood today. Having said that, spoken Thai has experienced several sound changes, especially during the evolution from Old Thai to Modern Thai.
Native Speakers
Presently there are around 61 million native Thai speakers in the world. The main countries where it is spoken are Thailand, China and the US. Central Thai is the standard language but there are also dialects of Thai which means many Thai nationals grow up bilingual, speaking Central Thai and their own respective dialect as well.
Thai Writing
The Thai language is written in the Thai alphabet, which is an “abugida” (or pseudo-alphabet). It consists of 44 consonant symbols and 32 vowel forms. More than half the vocabulary is taken from other languages such as Old Khmer, Sanskrit etc. Thai is written from left to right and there are no spaces between words.
