More about the Georgian Language
History of Georgian
The Georgian language is one of the oldest in the world. It is different from any other language and has its own alphabet which is beautiful and unique. It is the biggest Kartvelian language and has an ancient literary tradition. We can trace it back to an ancestral language – Proto-Kartvelian. The first Georgian-language printing house was formed in the 1620s in Italy, and it is in 1709, in Tbilisi, that the first Georgia printing house itself was founded.
Native Speakers
Only four million people speak Georgian as a first or second language, and they mostly live in Georgia.
Georgian Writing
Georgian is the official language of Georgia. It is written in its own writing system. It is the literary language for all regional subgroups of Georgians. The Georgian alphabet contains 33 letters and does not use capital letters. There can be up to eight consonants in one word, but you don’t see the same consonant side by side in a word.
